Sexy, can I say WTH is up with Calabria 2008?

The real 5 hottest hip hop songs out now, February 29th, 2008:

1) Don't Stop the Music by Rihanna

The catchy beat, homage to a former star, and raw energy make this song hot. It doesn't hurt that it's a Rihanna piece, who has been delightful ever since her hit If It's Lovin' That You Want. She's sweet but sexy.

2) Sweetest Girl, Dollar Bill by Wyclef Jean

Not such a danceable piece, but the serious themes of this song make it stand out. About time that hip hop looked at the damage prostitution causes, instead of glamorizing it. Also, gotta love the line "I never thought she would come and work for the president..." Oh, Mr. Washington...

3) Flashing Lights by Kanye West

A sad, yearning song. Of course, it's hard to emphasize with people being too rich, even if it is Biggie Smalls, but still a solid song. Better than a lot of the detritus out there for sure.

4) Superstar by Lupe Fiasco

Already analyzed this one.

5) Piece of Me by Britney Spears

Irony makes this song work. Brit, I hate to say this, but your song talks about coming to work with a kid on your arm. But if you don't start coming to your court orders, that sure as hell won't be happening!

The Charts Feb. 29 '08

Some weird stuff in the charts this week. Calabria 2008 by Enur moves up to 46, admittedly not a particularly exciting position to have, but much better than not being there at all. Thank God New Soul is at 49, and ready to leave the top 50.

Low, of course, stays on top, and I have to change my opinion of this song. I no longer hate it. I just dislike it. You got to admit that it does drive people crazy though, and if it makes other people happy, well... whatever.

Lupe Fiasco's Superstar shifts up to spot 12, which is sad, because it's starting to lose its appeal. At least to me, that is. I'm starting to suspect it'll head on up to the top ten and stick around there for months, similar to Apologize, which is just starting to get annoying. You can't insult the song itself because it is incredibly put together. It's just not something that you want to be listening to for more than 3 weeks.

Calabria 2008 is one hell of a weird song, and the music video is similarly strange. It's got that retro-pop vibe that's so popular and somewhat Japanese inspired, with Hispanic roots. At the same time, Sexy can I by Ray & Yung Berg hovers at around spot 20.
